Weekly Recap & It’s a Good Day to Not Be a Football Fan

So, the Broncos lost the Super Bowl.  Colorado is one sad state right now. I’ve never been a football fan and didn’t see a need to change my tune because my state’s team was in the Super Bowl this year, and now I’m glad I didn’t because I’m not inconsolable right now. I actually only watched the fourth quarter. Long before we knew the Broncos would be Super Bowling, my mother-in-law had bought theater tickets for all the girls of the family, so I spent the afternoon watching Mama Mia in Denver. This was a good choice.

This was the first week of my 10k training plan. I don’t want to give too much detail, since Heather normally charges for these plans, but I’ll give you the basics of what my week looked like.

Monday: Rest

Tuesday: AM: Ridiculously fast 400 repeats. I was supposed to run them between 4:26 and 4:34 pace…but my treadmill only goes up to 5:00. It was plenty fast. The power strip that my treadmill’s plugged into even kicked off once because it was scared. It was only four repeats, with 800m recoveries, so it really wasn’t so bad.
PM: 45:00 strength workout

Wednesday: 6 miles easy, core

Thursday: Mile repeats at goal 10k pace with 0.4-mile recoveries.

Friday: This was supposed to be a strength-only day, but I was naughty. We had a snow day, and I spent the morning reading and writing blogs, so by the time I went to the gym in the early afternoon, I’d been sitting pretty much all day. I was just going to do a little jog to loosen up my legs. I ran three miles. Not too long, but more than the zero scheduled. Then I did 45:00 of strength. And since the gym was dead, I took gym selfies like a real blogger.

Saturday: I was tired of the treadmill, so I decided to suck it up and run my 9-miler outside, despite it being 17 degrees out — especially since I have a race next Saturday, and conditions are supposed to be just like this weekend. So I bundled up and headed out. I hadn’t counted on there still being so much ice out, though. I was doing more ice-shuffling than running. My pace was more than 2 minutes slower than usual long run pace, and I was afraid I was going to hurt myself, so at 1.5 miles, I called it. Of course, I had to run the 1.5 miles back home, but then I did a quick wardrobe change and finished the last 6 miles on the treadmill. Dear ice: I hate you.

Sunday: 4-mile recovery run and core

This next week is pretty crazy …we have an inservice day tomorrow, then Tuesday we’re taking kids to Denver to watch Hamlet (I’m very cultured this week), Wednesday I’ll actually teach, Thursday and Friday it’s back to Denver for a conference, and Saturday is that chilly race. I’m guessing I’ll be pretty tired of that interstate by Sunday.

What was your best workout this week?
