Fall Classic Marathon Training: Race Week

So, I ran a marathon yesterday. I’ll write a full race recap and race review (spoiler alert: it’s a great race) later this week, but in a nutshell … I ran yet another 3:13 (this makes three of them) and took second place. I was on track for my 3:10 goal and the win until my digestive system decided to be a jerk. Whomp whomp.

But that’s a story for a later day, and I should probably recap my final week of training. Here you go.

Monday:
Rest

Tuesday:
4.2 miles nice and easy, then a short core workout

Wednesday:
Tempo intervals, 3x1000m, for a total of 6 miles

Thursday:
5 miles easy and some core

Friday:
3.5 slow and easy miles. I planned to take a rest day, but I was at a conference all day (i.e. sitting), and my legs were stiff as boards. I had to move them.

Saturday:
Another 3.5 miles, this time on the hotel treadmill since it was 33 degrees out and, like a dummy, I didn’t pack long sleeves. Followed by some stretching to precede another day of conference-sitting.

Sunday:
26.2 miles down a canyon. I’m hoping the official race pics are good (and borrowable), since I didn’t take any while I ran. Here’s one from after the race.

Total: 48..4 miles (22.2 pre-race)

This is a short and mostly pictureless blog post; sorry about that. I’m trying to summit Grading Mountain this week, and it’s leaving me short on blog time. But I promise that, unless the race pictures aren’t posted, I’ll get that recap written.

Anybody else race this weekend? How’d it go?

  1. I can imagine your frustration, but wow! You were so close to your goal and you had had doubts about it. At least the stomach is something out of your control, for the most part. So you know you put in a fantastic race. 33 degrees the day before a race in September! Only in Colorado! Can’t wait to read more.

  2. I look forward to the race recap cassie, sorry to hear that your stomach was being a pain. That is my greatest fear for the marathon, and that is why I am working on it so much during y training. I have had so many practice long runs (today included) where I am eating my entire pre race meal at the same time, and doing everything to make sure that doesn’t happen.

At least you know that once you get that figured out, you will be ready. Hope you are resting up!

  3. I can’t wait to read your re cap. I am sorry you didn’t reach your goal due to stomach issues- that sucks!! Racing is so stressful because something that is for the most part out of your control can affect your race. You look like a champ in your post race picture and can only ever dream of running a 3:13!!! My PR is a 3:28 but I hope I can someday improve on that time by just a little bit.

  4. A 3:13 marathon is absolutely ridiculous!!! How on earth do you do that Cassie!!?? Can I borrow your legs and speed for Portland, pretty please? 🙂 Congrats on your 2nd place finish. Can’t wait to hear all about the race.
